A heart attack happens when the flow of oxygen-rich blood to a section of heart muscle suddenly becomes blocked and the heart can’t get oxygen. According to WHO report, heart disease is the number one cause of death in the world. Furthermore, in 2008 17.3 million people died from cardiovascular diseases, and by 2030, more than 23 million people will die annually from CVDs.
Why is heart disease so deadly?
Besides the malnutrition, unhealthy lifestyle, stress and environmental pollution, one reason why heart disease it the number one reason of death in the world is that people usually ignore the symptoms and do not seek help on time. This may be so because sometimes the CVD symptoms are not so obvious or intense. Generally, they vary between individuals.
Dizziness and shortness of breath
If you are not suffering from asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, shortness of breath can be a sign of a heart attack. Dizziness can also indicate a heart attack.
Sickness
Vomiting, feeling sick, indigestion or stomach pain are frequent signs of heart attack.
Pressure
Unusual strong pressure in the chest or a feeling of discomfort and tightening around are symptoms of a heart failure.
Chest pain
According to Jean C. McSweeny, PhD, RN, associate dean for research at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Nursing in Little Rock, heart-related chest pain is centered under the breastbone, a little to the left of the center. He also told Web MD that the pain felt is like an elephant is sitting on your chest, and sometimes it can be pressure, fullness, uncomfortable feeling or squeezing.
Unusual pain elsewhere
Amy Tompson, a senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation says that the pain can start on the left or right side of the chest, then reach up to the neck and jaw. According to a 2012 U.S. survey, there were a number of patients with heart attack who didn`t experience chest pain or discomfort.
Anxiety
In many cases anxiety or feeling of fear about your health along with light-headedness or dizziness can be a sign of heart failure.
Looking ill
People who are about to have a heart attack can look heavily ill or ashen or grey.
Palpitations
Irregular and rapid heartbeat along with shortness of breath, weakness or dizziness can indicate heart failure, arrhythmia or heart attack. Arrhythmia when not treated on time can lead to heart attack.
Tiredness or weakness
According to British Heart Foundation, people, especially women, experienced tiredness and exhaustion before the heart attack occurred.
Sweating
People who are about to have a heart attack often break out in cold sweat.
